Many of our fisheries are in trouble. Menhaden, the food base for striped bass and many other coastal fish, is severely overfished, causing negative impacts along the entire coastal Gulf of Mexico, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Loss of mangrove habitats in Florida, habitats essentlal to tarpon, snook, and other gamefish, has exceeded 50%. The assults on salmon habitat are legendary. Loss of wetlands is impacting coastal fish populations. Amazingly, the use of gillnets, indiscriminant in their harvest, is still allowed. Anglers need to get involved to reverse these trends and to prevent additional assults on the fisheries.
